How Do Pregnancy Tests Work?

Pregnancy testing is the first step to confirming your pregnancy. Though you may receive a positive result, you’ll want an ultrasound to verify critical details.

Most women use at-home pregnancy testing kits to determine whether they may be pregnant, but false results are possible. Medical-grade pregnancy testing confirms a potential pregnancy, allowing you to identify your next steps.

Ava Health provides no-cost, confidential services so that you can get those answers.

Understanding Pregnancy Testing

Pregnancy testing can be blood or urine-based. Blood-based pregnancy testing is typically performed in a medical clinic or doctor’s office, while you can perform urine pregnancy testing in a clinical setting or your home.

All pregnancy testing checks if there are detectable levels of hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in your body. hCG is a hormone that only develops during pregnancy. During those initial weeks, hCG levels rise rapidly.

Some at-home pregnancy testing kits claim to be 99% accurate as early as the first day of your missed period. But for more trustworthy results, you should wait a few days after a missed period or several weeks after sexual intercourse.

Testing first thing in the morning is ideal, as your urine is at its most concentrated.

Testing too early can produce a false-negative result, which means you’re pregnant but tested too soon for hCG levels to be detected. You may need to wait and test again to receive an accurate result.

How Ava Health Can Help

Ava Health provides medical-grade pregnancy testing to confirm a potential pregnancy. You may be eligible for a limited first or second-trimester obstetric ultrasound if you receive a positive result with us.

The ultrasound will confirm your pregnancy’s viability (whether a heartbeat is present), gestational age (how far along you are), and location (whether your pregnancy is in the uterus). These details are critical to moving forward and learning about your options.
